Heartworm is a potentially fatal disease that is spread by mosquitoes. Tiny heartworm larvae are ingested when a mosquito bites an infected dog. Over the next 10–14 days, these larvae mature. When the mosquito bites another dog, they enter through the bite wound and infect their new host.
